The Government’s Nuclear Industrial Strategy highlights the issue of an ageing workforce, which is particularly acute among management roles and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), of which nearly 70% are due to retire by 2025.
Among other professional roles retirement rates are also substantial, at up to 50%. Analysis by members of the Skills Alliance indicates that approximately one thousand additional recruits in professional engineering and project roles are needed per year just to replace those leaving the industry. Taken together with the need to allow between ten and fifteen years to develop such expertise, the analysis highlights the scale of the challenge in the nuclear sector and the strategic approach needed to address it.
