DESCRIPTION:The Nuclear Institute Western Branch Speaking Competition will take place on Wednesday 20th July. It is open to those under 37; the qualifying age for the Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network. \nParticipants will give a ten minute presentation on "Nuclear and its applications". The winner will receive £300 and advance to the national final. DESCRIPTION:After the inaugural meeting back in 2019\, South-West Electron Microscopy (SW-EM) now returns for 2022 with a new summer date\, and hopefully a sunny Plymouth venue! \nSW-EM will once again be spread across two days\, starting and ending with a networking lunch on each day that we hope you will join us for. There will be a sit-down evening meal\, an exhibition and chance to chat to manufacturers about proposals\, products\, or collaborations\, as well as talks from both funders (i.e. UKRI funding councils) and industry.   \nThis event is open to anyone working in or with electron microscopy\, in an academic\, research\, or commercial environment\, and all are welcome to attend! SUMMARY:STEP Siting: Oldbury & Berkeley (Severn Edge) Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:The UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Authority) is currently looking for a site in the UK to host the world's first prototype fusion energy plant\, known as STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production). Of the fifteen longlisted sites\, only five now remain\, and the Severn Edge nomination proposes to reuse two sites at Oldbury in South Gloucestershire and Berkeley in Gloucestershire. \nFusion is the process that powers the universe. It has the potential to provide a near-limitless source of low-carbon energy by copying the processes that power the sun and stars where atoms are fused to release energy. \nSTEP is a UKAEA programme that will demonstrate the ability to generate net electricity from fusion. It will also determine how a fusion energy plant will be maintained throughout its operational life\, and prove the potential for it to produce its own fuel. \nSTEP’s mission is to deliver a UK prototype fusion energy plant\, targeting 2040\, and a path to commercial viability of fusion. Finding a home for STEP is one of the key objectives of the first phase of the programme and\, as Severn Edge is one of five shortlisted communities\, we want to hear your thoughts and feeling about the project. \nJoin this community focussed online forum to learn more about the programme\, and give your feedback first hand.

DESCRIPTION:Game Changers Technology Talks are aimed at anyone who is interested in technical innovation in the nuclear industry\, learning about cutting-edge research developments and understanding how the Game Changers programme helps solve challenges which can’t be met with off the shelf solutions. \nThis month's webinar will feature: \nSabrina Shirazi\, NNUF Hot Robotics\n \nThe National Nuclear User Facility for Hot Robotics (NNUF-HR) is an EPSRC funded programme. It assists UK academia and industry to deliver ground-breaking\, impactful research into the use of robotics and AI in extreme environments\, by providing opportunities to access cutting-edge equipment and expertise. The aim of the NNUF-HR is to support the UK ambition for more cost-effective decommissioning\, nuclear new-build\, advanced modular fission reactors and future fusion powerplants. Sabrina will share the facilities available via Hot Robotics and how you can access them. \nRob Sharratt\, Remote Maintenance Systems\nThe hazardous and congested environments combined with difficult access\, mean that decommissioning and dismantling radioactive nuclear cells and gloveboxes is a complex task. Manual decommissioning is hazardous for the operator and extremely time consuming and therefore the development of an effective remote deployment capability may facilitate safer\, cheaper decommissioning and reduce secondary waste generation. \nRMS is developing a ground-breaking Modular Tube Deployment System (MTDS) to enable access to hazardous nuclear environments efficiently and effectively\, while keeping human operatives safely out of harm. In this talk\, Rob will provide an outline of the functionality of the MTDS\, its possible uses and the staged process of development from initial concept idea through to full scale prototype.  \nRegistration\nRegistration is via Eventbrite. Each team will show-off their cutting-edge robots and autonomous systems simultaneously to live audiences on YouTube. You can flick between different demos running during the two-hour livestream\, ask questions and interact with the research teams in the chat. \nNNUF Hot Robotics Showcase \n \nThe Bristol Fenswood facility is one of four partners in the National Nuclear User Facility for Hot Robotics (NNUF-HR). NNUF-HR is home to a wide variety of equipment\, including robotic manipulators\, drones\, ground vehicles and sensors which are available for hire to both academia and industry. This demo will showcase technology available at NNUF-HR Bristol\, being used in a radioactive dispersal event scenario. It will consist of a large\, tracked SuperDroid robot combined with a KUKA LBR iiwa robotic manipulator and an attached sensor package.
