SUMMARY:'Nuclear End States' Industry/Academic Networking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to nuclear industry professionals as well as academics and early career researchers of any discipline.  \n Book a space on the workshop here. \n  \nAll nuclear reactors and other types of nuclear facilities must reach an agreed site end state after the end of their operational life\, which spans many decades. This will include decommissioning\, decontamination\, full or partial demolition of buildings and remediation of land. All materials generated through this process\, as well as radioactive waste generated through the operational lifetime of the reactor\, must be managed appropriately\, in accordance with the level of risk of that material\, for timescales of up to a million years. This includes landfill\, at-surface disposal\, near-surface disposal\, deep geological disposal\, and in some cases\, in-situ disposal. These timescales bring unique environmental challenges\, for example\, around climate change\, long-term prediction and monitoring. \nAttaining "nuclear end states" efficiently and cost-effectively requires blue-sky thinking and state-of-the-art engineering\, with strong networking between academia and those organizations responsible for bringing nuclear sites to the end of their life. Managing the environment during the multi-decade operational lifetime of nuclear reactors also brings unique challenges that research is required to resolve. \nThis workshop hosted by the South West Nuclear Hub is an opportunity to hear from industry and Government representatives about nuclear end states\, the challenges that remain in attaining them\, and how academic research across the disciplines could support this. Industry attendees include Nuclear Waste Services\, Sellafield and EDF\, with more to be confirmed. Academic speakers will highlight emerging areas of research that are being\, or could be\, used to support nuclear end states\, as well as other environmental factors associated with the safe long-term operation and management of nuclear sites. \nWe aim to highlight potential funding opportunities\, build support for a developing a bid for a NERC Centre for Doctoral Training in Nuclear End States (subject to internal processes) and to host a structured networking event\, to establish new academic-industry partnerships. \nThis event is open to nuclear industry professionals as well as academics and early career researchers of any discipline\, including\, but not limited to: Earth Sciences\, Civil Engineering\, Materials Science & Engineering\, Geographical Sciences\, Advanced Manufacturing\, Anthropology\, Policy Studies\, Sociology\, Biological Sciences\, Design Engineering\, Chemistry\, Computer Science\, Mechanical Engineering\, Physics etc. \nThis workshop is co-funded by the Cabot Institute Community Event Fund.

DESCRIPTION:The South West Nuclear Hub is delighted to present the first in a new series of webinars dedicated to advancing nuclear research and innovation. This hybrid event will be held by the Nuclear Innovation and Research Office (NIRO). NIRO provide independent strategic and technical advice to government on the research and innovation needed for nuclear energy to play a significant role in the UK’s future low carbon and secure energy mix. \nCurrent Government policy is for nuclear to contribute up to 24GWe by 2050 through a variety of reactor types. The most recent Civil Nuclear: Roadmap to 2050 also committed to a High Temperature Gas Reactor Demonstrator to be built and operatable by the early 2030’s. Over the last year NIRO and NIRAB have worked together to understand the Research\, Development and Innovation needed to deliver a HTGR demonstrator within these timescales against the backdrop of the current civil nuclear landscape. We’ve recently published a publicly available documents which describes what RD&I we believe is needed to enable this ambition to be met. This talk will provide an overview of HTGR’s in the context of the current landscape\, as well as provide a more in-depth discussion on how we came to derive the activities we believe are needed to support delivery of a demonstrator. \nPresented by: \n\nDan Mathers- Executive Director of NIRO\nLiv Thompson- Director of Strategic Nuclear Capability at NIRO/ NIRAB\nGary Bolton- Senior Technical Advisor\, NIRO\n\nLogistics: \nWhen: Monday 18th November\nTime: 17.00 - 18.30 (talk starts at 17.15)\nWhere: Lecture theatre 3.30 (third floor)\, Wills Memorial Building\, Queens Road\, Clifton\, Bristol\, BS8 1QE\nOr online via Teams - Teams link will be sent in meeting invite \nData: \nYour details will be used solely to send you information about this event and not for other purposes. SUMMARY:Inescapable Obligations: Guest Lecture with Professor Tim Stone CBE
DESCRIPTION:In a very much dynamic political environment with a strong drive to net-zero emissions\, the nuclear sector has eventually made its way in the UK to survive.  Nuclear Fission Power is expected to grow  with the advent of at least 2 EPRs\, Rolls Royce SMRs and High Temperature Gas Reactors. If the government is to achieve even a fraction of the ambition of the Prime Minister there will need to be more.  But\, what has changed? What happened in the last 6 months that change the pathway from a withered to a flourishing  industry\, and more importantly is it going to help us achieve net-zero? \n Visiting Prof Tim Stone CBE will be speaking about the recent changes in political and financing environment and what were the key aspects of the UK nuclear industry that makes it a robust and reliable sector to support net-zero ambitions. He’ll start out with a wider picture look at the ultimate roles which the State cannot\, ever\, escape and why - and use that as the context for his lecture.  He might even bring in references to the Bank of England and financial regulation to illustrate the wider point. What is clear\, is that government have inescapable obligations which even they don’t realise until a relevant crisis hits.  \nSpeaker: Professor Tim Stone CBE\nTim Stone is Chair of the Nuclear Industry Association and also Nuclear Risk Insurers\, which insures over 320 licenced sites globally. He has a wealth of experience in infrastructure\, nuclear power and finance\, with several years’ experience working closely with government and industry in a variety of roles. \nTim was a member of the board of Horizon Nuclear Power from 2014-2021 and of the Board of the European Investment Bank from 2003-2018. Until 2013\, Tim was the Expert Chair of the Office for Nuclear Development in DECC and the Senior Advisor to five successive Secretaries of State responsible for energy. In 2021 Tim was made a Visiting Professor at the University of Bristol.  \n \n  \nAttendance \nThis lecture will take place on Tuesday 17th May 22 at 6:00 pm in Room 1.40 Pugsley Lecture Theatre\, Queens Building at the University of Bristol.  Sandwiches and drinks will be available from 5.30pm.  \nIt is free to attend but to help predict numbers please register via the Linkedin event page. \n Register

SUMMARY:STEP Siting: Oldbury & Berkeley (Severn Edge) Community Forum
DESCRIPTION:The UKAEA (UK Atomic Energy Authority) is currently looking for a site in the UK to host the world's first prototype fusion energy plant\, known as STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production). Of the fifteen longlisted sites\, only five now remain\, and the Severn Edge nomination proposes to reuse two sites at Oldbury in South Gloucestershire and Berkeley in Gloucestershire. \nFusion is the process that powers the universe. It has the potential to provide a near-limitless source of low-carbon energy by copying the processes that power the sun and stars where atoms are fused to release energy. \nSTEP is a UKAEA programme that will demonstrate the ability to generate net electricity from fusion. It will also determine how a fusion energy plant will be maintained throughout its operational life\, and prove the potential for it to produce its own fuel. \nSTEP’s mission is to deliver a UK prototype fusion energy plant\, targeting 2040\, and a path to commercial viability of fusion. Finding a home for STEP is one of the key objectives of the first phase of the programme and\, as Severn Edge is one of five shortlisted communities\, we want to hear your thoughts and feeling about the project. \nJoin this community focussed online forum to learn more about the programme\, and give your feedback first hand.

SUMMARY:Game Changers: January Tech Talk
DESCRIPTION:Game Changers Technology Talks are aimed at anyone who is interested in technical innovation in the nuclear industry\, learning about cutting-edge research developments and understanding how the Game Changers programme helps solve challenges which can’t be met with off the shelf solutions. \nThis month's webinar will feature: \nSabrina Shirazi\, NNUF Hot Robotics\n \nThe National Nuclear User Facility for Hot Robotics (NNUF-HR) is an EPSRC funded programme. It assists UK academia and industry to deliver ground-breaking\, impactful research into the use of robotics and AI in extreme environments\, by providing opportunities to access cutting-edge equipment and expertise. The aim of the NNUF-HR is to support the UK ambition for more cost-effective decommissioning\, nuclear new-build\, advanced modular fission reactors and future fusion powerplants. Sabrina will share the facilities available via Hot Robotics and how you can access them. \nRob Sharratt\, Remote Maintenance Systems\nThe hazardous and congested environments combined with difficult access\, mean that decommissioning and dismantling radioactive nuclear cells and gloveboxes is a complex task. Manual decommissioning is hazardous for the operator and extremely time consuming and therefore the development of an effective remote deployment capability may facilitate safer\, cheaper decommissioning and reduce secondary waste generation. \nRMS is developing a ground-breaking Modular Tube Deployment System (MTDS) to enable access to hazardous nuclear environments efficiently and effectively\, while keeping human operatives safely out of harm. In this talk\, Rob will provide an outline of the functionality of the MTDS\, its possible uses and the staged process of development from initial concept idea through to full scale prototype.  \nRegistration\nRegistration is via Eventbrite.
