DESCRIPTION:Robot Lab Live is a virtual robotics showcase featuring 16 of the UK’s top robotics research groups. Each team will show-off their cutting-edge robots and autonomous systems simultaneously to live audiences on YouTube. You can flick between different demos running during the two-hour livestream\, ask questions and interact with the research teams in the chat. \nNNUF Hot Robotics Showcase \n \nThe Bristol Fenswood facility is one of four partners in the National Nuclear User Facility for Hot Robotics (NNUF-HR). NNUF-HR is home to a wide variety of equipment\, including robotic manipulators\, drones\, ground vehicles and sensors which are available for hire to both academia and industry. This demo will showcase technology available at NNUF-HR Bristol\, being used in a radioactive dispersal event scenario. It will consist of a large\, tracked SuperDroid robot combined with a KUKA LBR iiwa robotic manipulator and an attached sensor package. SUMMARY:Data Week 2021: Engineering with Digital Twins
DESCRIPTION:This session explores the fundamentals of digital twins in an environment where equipment integrity\, operation\, and safety are traditionally supported by engineering simulations. \nBacked by a wealth of experience across industries\, we will cover how it works\, benefits\, challenges\, and tips on doing it successfully\, with Q&A. We particularly welcome questions about challenges from your industry. No expertise required to attend. \nEngineering simulations help us turn information we have into information we want\, to help us make decisions. In this context\, these decisions might be about when to carry out maintenance\, or when to replace equipment. This reduces cost\, as equipment can be run longer or in more extreme conditions; it can improve safety\, reducing the likelihood of unexpected failure. \nHigh degree-of-freedom models can provide accurate simulations of systems from first principles\, such as FEA\, CFD and EM solvers. With the right validation\, these provide effective ways of turning selected input data into more useful data for life predictions. The issue with these is usually one of speed\, limiting the use of simulations to single case analyses or short selections. \nAn engineering simulation can be seen as an expensive and complex mapping function\, taking a small set of inputs to deterministically produce a large set of outputs. Treating the complex simulation as a ‘grey-box’ control system\, pulling together techniques of system classification\, machine learning\, data-driven methods and classical engineering physics\, a minimal alternative to the mapping function can be found: our Reduced Order Model or Digital Twin. These can drastically reduce simulation times to generate new results from new inputs\, from hours to milliseconds. \nThis physics-based approach to system classification is key to providing confidence in safety\, particularly in a regulatory environment. \nThe speed of these methods opens the possibilities of new outcomes\, such as real-time monitoring and probabilistic assessments. SUMMARY:Data Week 2021: the Nuclear Industry x Data Science Experts Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Nuclear Industry x Data Science Experts: Challenge Collaboration Workshop\nThis event will be hosted and chaired by Danny Thomas\, Principal Engineer at Norton Straw Consultants.  \nData generated by the nuclear industry has increased exponentially\, thus requiring new and efficient analysis methods. While the need for data science and AI is clear\, defining solutions to specific problems and finding exact methodologies to tackle them is lacking. This session presents four areas in which the nuclear industry requires data science expertise.  \nDesigned as a match-making workshop\, we invite you to join and help us tackle these challenges: \nRadiation Sensor Networks & Multiple Networked detectors – Whilst providing considerable data volumes\, these are not currently fully utilised to understand the nature and evolution of the contributing radioactivity. Led by Dr Peter Martin\, University of Bristol  \nMicro-structurally informed simulation models – Currently physically based and accurate\, these only simulate a tiny volume of materials\, insignificant to real component size. Data driven\, AI enabled surrogate models are required to offer more realistic solutions for extending their applicability. Led by Professor Mahmoud Mostafavi\, University of Bristol  \nInterrogating microstructure and damage- Scanning electron microscopy and electron back-scatter diffraction are extensively used to explore degradation mechanisms. However\, data volumes extracted are prohibitively large for manual analysis. Analysis is also beyond physics agnostic image processing software\, as user experience in deciphering images is invaluable. It is therefore desirable to capture the underlying user decision process through an AI algorithm and combine it with data analysis to efficiently sift the large data gathered in each experiment. Led by Alisa Sratulat\, Mipar Image Analysis \nNon-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) measurements - Performed on in-service components to assess safety and confirm material evolution is consistent with model predictions\, most NDE measurements are now digital\, enabling the acquisition of high-fidelity data at unprecedented scales. Thus\, there is a pressing need for complete automation of the data analysis workflow. The presentation will set the scene by presenting a high-level description of the roadmap by industry leads. \nSafe operation of safety critical plants\, such as nuclear\, is underpinned by structural integrity assessments of their key components. A structural integrity assessment examines the mechanical state of a structure to determine if it is fit for purpose and safe to operate. At the heart of the process are the material performance models\, which use knowledge of loading and operating conditions of components as well as their histories as input. \nThe material performance models are built on micro/meso scale material characterisation and modelling\, supported by a vast legacy of scientific literature and industrial experience. Further\, Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE) measurements are performed in-service to confirm that the evolution of the material is consistent with model predictions. If discrepancies are found\, the assessment models can be updated. \nThe vast in-service data therefore provides the feedback loop that maintains alignment between the physical and digital domains. The complexity of the underpinning models\, the acquisition of high-fidelity digital NDE data\, and the need for fast processing of the data and updating the models are key drivers for complete automation of the data analysis workflow. \nRegistration\nAccess the Zoom link via the button below.  \nN.b. DESCRIPTION:Nuclear safeguards are measures to verify that countries comply with their international obligations not to use nuclear materials from their civil nuclear programmes to manufacture nuclear weapons. \nFollowing the end of the post EU exit transition period\, and the UK exiting Euratom on 31 December 2020\, ONR is now the UK’s nuclear safeguards regulator\, responsible for the domestic safeguards regime and operating the UK’s State System of Accountancy for and Control of Nuclear Materials (SSAC). \nOver the last three years\, ONR has worked with UK government\, nuclear industry and other stakeholders to build the necessary capability and capacity to ensure that UK continues to meet its international safeguards obligations and play a lead role on the world stage to ensure that nuclear materials continue to be used for peaceful purposes. \nWe welcome you to a short presentation and a discussion on this important subject on the 27th January 2021 at 10:30am. \nSpeakers\n \nMahtab Khan – ONR Safeguards Delivery Lead\nMahtab has worked in the nuclear industry and its regulation for nearly 20 years. SUMMARY:The Curious Incident of the (Robot) Dog in the Nuclear Environment
DESCRIPTION:Institute of Physics Materials and Characterisation Group Christmas Lecture\nIt is a generally well accepted argument that when it comes to surveying high activity nuclear facilities\, robots offer a potentially safer and preferable solution to using human beings. In this IOP seminar we will tell the tale of why walking robots offer an eye catching but also technically sensible approach for surveying certain legacy nuclear facilities\, culminating with ground-breaking deployments inside the Chernobyl New Safe Confinement (NSC) building. \nSpeaker - Professor Tom Scott\n \nProfessor Tom Scott is Director of the Interface Analysis Centre (IAC) at the University of Bristol\, and lead for the newly established National Nuclear User Facility for Hot Robotics. \nHe is also a Royal Academy of Engineering Professorial Research Fellow co-funded by the AWE\, Director of the South West Nuclear Hub and lectures in both the School of Physics and the School of Earth Sciences at Bristol. \nHis research expertise is around the detection and characterisation of nuclear materials\, to aid prediction of their behaviour in engineered and environmental scenarios. This includes a specific strand of activity relating to nuclear robotics and sensors.
