DESCRIPTION:Nuclear safeguards are measures to verify that countries comply with their international obligations not to use nuclear materials from their civil nuclear programmes to manufacture nuclear weapons. \nFollowing the end of the post EU exit transition period\, and the UK exiting Euratom on 31 December 2020\, ONR is now the UK’s nuclear safeguards regulator\, responsible for the domestic safeguards regime and operating the UK’s State System of Accountancy for and Control of Nuclear Materials (SSAC). \nOver the last three years\, ONR has worked with UK government\, nuclear industry and other stakeholders to build the necessary capability and capacity to ensure that UK continues to meet its international safeguards obligations and play a lead role on the world stage to ensure that nuclear materials continue to be used for peaceful purposes. \nWe welcome you to a short presentation and a discussion on this important subject on the 27th January 2021 at 10:30am. \nSpeakers\n \nMahtab Khan – ONR Safeguards Delivery Lead\nMahtab has worked in the nuclear industry and its regulation for nearly 20 years. SUMMARY:The Curious Incident of the (Robot) Dog in the Nuclear Environment
DESCRIPTION:Institute of Physics Materials and Characterisation Group Christmas Lecture\nIt is a generally well accepted argument that when it comes to surveying high activity nuclear facilities\, robots offer a potentially safer and preferable solution to using human beings. In this IOP seminar we will tell the tale of why walking robots offer an eye catching but also technically sensible approach for surveying certain legacy nuclear facilities\, culminating with ground-breaking deployments inside the Chernobyl New Safe Confinement (NSC) building. \nSpeaker - Professor Tom Scott\n \nProfessor Tom Scott is Director of the Interface Analysis Centre (IAC) at the University of Bristol\, and lead for the newly established National Nuclear User Facility for Hot Robotics. \nHe is also a Royal Academy of Engineering Professorial Research Fellow co-funded by the AWE\, Director of the South West Nuclear Hub and lectures in both the School of Physics and the School of Earth Sciences at Bristol. \nHis research expertise is around the detection and characterisation of nuclear materials\, to aid prediction of their behaviour in engineered and environmental scenarios. This includes a specific strand of activity relating to nuclear robotics and sensors. DESCRIPTION:Virtual CARM is the latest in a series of conferences run by NPL for the nuclear metrology community\, bringing together expertise from areas including nuclear medicine\, the nuclear industry\, manufacturers\, radioanalytical laboratories and academia. The meeting is a great opportunity to keep up-to-date on progress in nuclear metrology sphere and to network with colleagues across a wide range of sectors.\nThe virtual Nuclear Medicine Metrology Meeting will hold daily sessions dedicated to recent advances in nuclear medicine and the underpinning measurement challenges. The topics include medical radiochemistry and production\, development of standards\, imaging\, dosimetry and artificial intelligence. \nvCARM will also include sessions on nuclear decay data\, radiological characterisation\, metrology for fusion and high energy neutron fields. SUMMARY:The Saga of UK Radioactive Waste Disposal
DESCRIPTION:The Western Regional Group is pleased to welcome Dr. Ian Crossland nuclear specialist with more than 50 years’ experience of the nuclear industry. For the past thirty years he has specialised in radioactive waste management with a particular interest in disposal. He has first-hand experience of the roller-coaster ride produced by the many swings of UK policy in this area. \n \nThe UK has a small mountain of radioactive waste that is stored at many locations around the country. This is the legacy of almost 100 years’ exploitation of nuclear technology in research\, medicine\, weapons and electricity production. Some of this waste will remain dangerous for millennia. Even if we were to stop\nproducing it\, the legacy of past years would still need to be safely managed to prevent its being a danger to the public. But what to do? Do we continue to store it and\, by so doing\, pass on the burden of care to future generations? DESCRIPTION:Compact Spherical Tokamak – Rob Slade\, Tokamak Energy\n \nMonday 19th October\, 1-2pm\nTokamak Energy is aiming to change the way the world generates power by developing a scalable fusion solution that will give the world an attractive new base-load power source that is plentiful\, safe\, cost effective\, secure and clean. Their target is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion as an energy source by 2030. Rob Slade\, Director of Technology Development\, will give a talk on the ST-F1 with a focus on the high temperature superconducting magnet technology. \nRob Slade\, Director\, Technology Development\, Tokamak Energy\nAfter receiving a degree in Physics from Bristol University in 1986\, Rob started work at Rolls Royce developing gas turbine instrumentation. An interest in electromagnetics led to employment at Oxford Instruments developing downhole NMR instruments using permanent magnets\, then high field NMR using superconducting magnets and dynamic nuclear hyperpolarization methods. \nAfter a spell a Siemens Magnet Technology developing whole body MRI\, he moved to New Zealand where he developed an extremity MRI scanner using High Temperature Superconducting coil technology. SUMMARY:Advanced Modular Reactor Webinar Series: Stable Salt Reactors
DESCRIPTION:Stable Salt Reactors – Dr Ian Scott\, Moltex Energy\n \nWednesday 7th October\, 12.30-1.30pm\nMoltex Energy are developing an inherently safe Stable Salt Reactor (SSR) which aims to provide carbon-free electricity generation technology with low upfront costs and reliable\, large-scale power at 300-500 MW per reactor unit. In addition to the ability to store energy for release in times of high energy demand\, the technology can recycle nuclear waste as fuel\, operate at high temperature to produce Hydrogen and use Thorium as an alternative to Urainium. The talk will be delivered by Moltex Chairman & Chief Scientist Ian Scott. \nSpeaker biography\nIan went to Cambridge University to study nuclear physics\, but was seduced during his first year by the excitement of the fast moving biological sciences and made his first career in that field. He became one of the four Chief Scientists in Unilever’s international organisation\, leading the global bioscience program before leaving to found an entrepreneurial drug discovery company. \nIn 2012 he became bemused by how nuclear energy had gone from being "too cheap to meter" to too expensive to afford and determined to try to remedy that flaw which was preventing nuclear energy making any meaningful contribution to fighting the climate change crisis. SUMMARY:RAIN human-robot interaction for nuclear workshop
DESCRIPTION:Optimising the way humans and robots interact is fundamental to their usage and effectiveness in nuclear environments. In all research areas of the RAIN Hub feedback and discussion with industry stakeholders is invaluable. This is the first RAIN session focusing on Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). \nOver two days (Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th September) RAIN will host 7 separate online sessions\, each diving into 1 of 7 research themes.
