SUMMARY:Advanced Modular Reactor Webinar Series: Spherical Tokamaks
DESCRIPTION:Compact Spherical Tokamak – Rob Slade\, Tokamak Energy\n \nMonday 19th October\, 1-2pm\nTokamak Energy is aiming to change the way the world generates power by developing a scalable fusion solution that will give the world an attractive new base-load power source that is plentiful\, safe\, cost effective\, secure and clean. Their target is to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion as an energy source by 2030. Rob Slade\, Director of Technology Development\, will give a talk on the ST-F1 with a focus on the high temperature superconducting magnet technology. \nRob Slade\, Director\, Technology Development\, Tokamak Energy\nAfter receiving a degree in Physics from Bristol University in 1986\, Rob started work at Rolls Royce developing gas turbine instrumentation. An interest in electromagnetics led to employment at Oxford Instruments developing downhole NMR instruments using permanent magnets\, then high field NMR using superconducting magnets and dynamic nuclear hyperpolarization methods. \nAfter a spell a Siemens Magnet Technology developing whole body MRI\, he moved to New Zealand where he developed an extremity MRI scanner using High Temperature Superconducting coil technology. SUMMARY:Advanced Modular Reactor Webinar Series: Stable Salt Reactors
DESCRIPTION:Stable Salt Reactors – Dr Ian Scott\, Moltex Energy\n \nWednesday 7th October\, 12.30-1.30pm\nMoltex Energy are developing an inherently safe Stable Salt Reactor (SSR) which aims to provide carbon-free electricity generation technology with low upfront costs and reliable\, large-scale power at 300-500 MW per reactor unit. In addition to the ability to store energy for release in times of high energy demand\, the technology can recycle nuclear waste as fuel\, operate at high temperature to produce Hydrogen and use Thorium as an alternative to Urainium. The talk will be delivered by Moltex Chairman & Chief Scientist Ian Scott. \nSpeaker biography\nIan went to Cambridge University to study nuclear physics\, but was seduced during his first year by the excitement of the fast moving biological sciences and made his first career in that field. He became one of the four Chief Scientists in Unilever’s international organisation\, leading the global bioscience program before leaving to found an entrepreneurial drug discovery company. \nIn 2012 he became bemused by how nuclear energy had gone from being "too cheap to meter" to too expensive to afford and determined to try to remedy that flaw which was preventing nuclear energy making any meaningful contribution to fighting the climate change crisis. SUMMARY:Managing the risks and consequences of a large polluting accident
DESCRIPTION:The J-value framework (J for Judgement) is an integrated methodology that generates objective advice on how much should be spent to avert human harm and environmental loss. It estimates the maximum it is reasonable to spend on a safety measure or system by balancing the safety expenditure against the increase life expectancy it brings about. \nAt its core is the concept of the life-quality index (LQI)\, which is an increasing function of both life expectancy and annual utility\, with risk-aversion used to convert monetary income to utility – the satisfaction that the money brings. SUMMARY:Breeder Blanket Design in Fusion Reactors: Innovations and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:IDOM has been contracted by UKAEA to develop a novel breeder blanket design concept to be used in the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) Fusion Power Plant. The STEP programme aims at accelerating the delivery of sustainable fusion energy thus\, IDOM’s task was to develop an innovative conceptual design for a breeder blanket that is overcoming the various challenges facing the existing breeder blankets’ designs. \nIn this webinar\, the speakers will give an overview of IDOM capabilities and experience in Fusion Energy\, introduce the breeder blanket technology and working principals. Then\, the speakers will talk more specifically about their recent experience and involvement in the STEP project explaining the methodology adopted to develop the breeder blanket conceptual design proposal for the STEP programme. \nCredit: EUROfusion\nThis methodology involved conducting a series of analyses on different breeder blanket designs covering the material properties and their compatibility\, the design configuration\, the neutronics analysis\, the thermal-hydraulics analysis\, a preliminary structural analysis\, safety aspects\, and waste segregation and disposal. DESCRIPTION:On the 2nd June from 12 - 1pm\, Game Changers are starting Lunchtime Technology talks on Zoom. Each session they will feature 2 innovative projects that have been funded through the Game Changers programme.  \nThe opening session will feature:  \n\n\nDetecting hydrogen at range – Dr David Stothard\, Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics\nThe generation of hydrogen through corrosion or radiolysis is a common phenomenon encountered across Sellafield and can be thought of as a concern or a useful mechanism to monitor the condition of an asset.  In either case\, it is highly advantageous to detect over extended ranges\, without needing to directly deploy instruments in difficult to reach areas. \nIn this talk\, David will present a standalone remote hydrogen detection system which is capable of measuring hydrogen down to a concentration of 0.05%\, over distances between 0.1 to 100m.  Recently tested in a successful active deployment\, Fraunhofer’s system uses only light to make measurements meaning that hydrogen can be detected without placing operators or instruments in sensitive or hazardous areas. \n\n\n\n\nExtending the life of battery powered sensors – Professor Bernard Stark\, Sensor Driven\nTraditional sensors constantly use battery power\, regularly sleeping\, waking and measuring when often there is nothing of interest to measure. This typically limits battery lifetime to a few years. \nSensor Driven have developed unique microchips that can extend battery lifetime to decades using minuscule amounts of energy directly from transducer signals\, or from leakage currents\, to wake up the measuring electronics and take a reading. \nIn this talk\, Bernard will show how this new technology can be used to monitor important information relating to movement\, moisture\, temperature\, noise and more\, and present results from recent radiation testing.  Considerably extended battery life may have significant potential for Sellafield where sensors need to be used in difficult to reach areas and challenging environments. \n\n\nHow to access\n[button link="https://www.gamechangers.technology/lunchtime-technology-talks/" bg_color="#806ab7" border="#806ab7" window="yes"]Event page[/button]\nThe webinar will be via Zoom - Meeting ID: 835 5574 7161. SUMMARY:IOP Nuclear Industry Group webinar: Space Batteries
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear power - in the form of radioisotope power systems (RPSs) - has been used to power many of the most significant space missions during the last 50 years. For almost all the missions to date the radioisotope has been Plutonium 238. \nHowever Plutonium 238 is very expensive and difficult to make and the worldwide availability is so limited that missions using it can only be considered occasionally. There is an alternative\, Americium 241. Whilst it is a waste to the nuclear industry\, Americium 241 is also a heat producing radioisotope that has similar properties to the Plutonium 238 used in RPSs. \nSpeaker \nTim Tinsley currently holds the role of Account Director for Special Nuclear Material at the National Nuclear Laboratory.
