The South West Nuclear Hub Seminar Series is going on tour to member university, the University of the West of England. Giving the final talk of 2018 will be Lt. Tim Ward, of the Submarine Delivery Agency at the Ministry of Defence.
- Venue: Room 4B031, B Block, Frenchay Campus, UWE, BS16 1QY
- Time: 6pm (for 6.30pm start)
- Date: 4/12/18
In this talk Lt. Tim Ward will focus on the operation of a Nuclear Reactor on a Submarine and general difficulties associated with this, and what lessons can be learned for land-based operation.
For the last 65 years, Pressurised Water Reactors have been propelling submarines around the oceans. As the gas cooled reactors of the past enter decommissioning, the operation of Pressurised Water Reactors is becoming more favourable, and the manufacture of smaller reactors could be the answer to an effective nuclear future for the United Kingdom.
Having operated small Pressurised Water Reactors for decades, the Royal Navy has years of operational experience which could be applicable to Civil Nuclear. Nuclear Submarines are unmatched in their endurance and their introduction changed marine warfare forever.
With real life examples, this seminar aims to give an insight into the operation of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant works, what are the challenges associated with it, and how we ensure that the plant remains safe whilst at under the ocean. Additionally, the seminar will give listeners an introduction into what life is like living under the sea, how we create a habitable environment for months at a time and how we maintain these valuable assets.

Nuclear Seminar Series
The aim of the series is to highlight the scientific and engineering challenges which face nuclear energy and the multidisciplinary research which goes on to meet them. The South West Nuclear Hub curates a programme of diverse speakers from across the industry to cover important and topical issues. All seminars are free and open to all.
Future talks in 2019 will include:
- Professor James Marrow - University of Oxford
- Fiona Rayment - National Nuclear Laboratory
- Cherry Tweed - Radioactive Waste Management
