Nuclear Institute Western Branch seminar on Generic Design Assessments

The South West Nuclear Hub hosted another Nuclear Institute Western Branch evening seminar at the University of Bristol on Tuesday 10th April.

The talk was given by Rob Hooper, Principal Consultant for Altran UK. Altran acts as an intermediary for the Office for Nuclear Regulation to support companies proposing a reactor design, therefore Rob was able to give a highly relevant industry insight into the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process of the AP1000, EPR and ABWR nuclear reactor designs.

The topic of the seminar was in the context of control and instrumentation, and particular mention the of UK's unique nuclear regulatory and safety environment was made.  It also emphasised a 4-step, goal-based argument is needed for a successful GDA.

This area falls into the South West Nuclear Hub's Systems Reliability theme, which is led by Dr John May. He gave a brief overview of the University's capabilities in this field that are encapsulated in the Safety Systems Research Centre in the Faculty of Engineering. This includes areas including cyber security, organisational resilience, C&I assurance and wireless communications.
