This is for their Nuclear Innovation Programme projects SIMPLE and InFORM. These are collaborations between: Nuclear AMRC, University of Sheffield Physics Dept, University of Strathclyde, TWI, Peak NDT, Sheffield Forgemasters, Metlase, Cambridge Vacuum Engineering.
InFORM project
The Inform project aims to develop a range of advanced techniques which could halve the cost and time of manufacturing large complex nuclear components. This is being supported by £1.1m funding from the Department for Business, Energy & Industry Strategy (BEIS).
SIMPLE project
The Simple project aims to integrate a range of machining, fabrication and inspection operations onto a single manufacturing platform, reducing the need to move large items and components between work areas.
Other nominations for Hub members
Elsewhere Associate Members the National Nuclear Laboratory has been shortlisted in the Aerospace, Defence & Security category for the below project:
- UK scientists generate electricity from rare element to power future space missions –University of Leicester, National Nuclear Laboratory & European Thermodynamics Ltd
2018 Success
This is not the first involvement for our network. At the 2018 awards ceremony, the South West Nuclear Hub as a whole won the Academic Innovator category, showcasing innovative projects such as diamond detectors for radiation dose rate measurements, seismic qualification of graphite and pipeline devices for radioactive environments.
