Young scientists and engineers in the nuclear industry gathered for the Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network event last week, which was kindly hosted by Burges Salmon at their Bristol offices. The South West Nuclear Hub attended this event and met with a wide variety of nuclear professionals from the Bristol and wider South West region.
Other exhibitors included new build operators Horizon Nuclear Power and EDF Energy, and locally-based company Efinor.

Western Branch Speaking Competition
The exhibition and networking event was followed by the Western Branch Speaking competition. The judging panel included Dr Chris Hutson, Research Associate in the School of Physics at the University of Bristol, who was the previous winner of this competition in 2017. The other judges were Anna Ellis, NI Western Branch Chair and Ian Salter, Partner at Burges Salmon.
The competition was contested between six entrants who each gave a 10 minute speech on the brief of "any nuclear energy related subject”. After a tough heat, the eventual winner was James Metcalfe of Horizon Nuclear Power.
